GST in India has five slabs — 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essentials like fresh produce sit at 0%; daily-use items at 5%; standard goods and most services at 12%–18%; and luxury or sin goods (premium cars, tobacco, aerated drinks) at 28% — often with an additional cess.
To add GST, multiply the base amount by the GST rate (e.g. ₹1,000 × 18% = ₹180) and add it back: ₹1,180 total. To remove GST from an MRP that already includes it, divide the MRP by (1 + rate); for 18% GST, divide by 1.18.
For an intra-state sale (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central) and SGST (State). For an inter-state sale, the same total GST goes to IGST (Integrated GST) and is later apportioned by the GST Council.
Use the formula: Original price = MRP ÷ (1 + GST%). For an MRP of ₹1,180 with 18% GST, original = ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. The GST extracted = ₹180.
Most fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, curd, eggs, unbranded atta and rice, salt, education and healthcare services, and select books and newspapers are GST-exempt. Petroleum, alcohol for human consumption, and electricity remain outside GST.
GST — Goods and Services Tax — is a single indirect tax that replaced VAT, service tax, and other levies in 2017. It applies on the value addition at every stage of the supply chain. To add GST, multiply the base amount by the rate; to remove GST from an inclusive price, divide the inclusive amount by 1 + rate / 100.
For a sale within the same state (intra-state), the GST is split equally between Central GST and State GST. For a sale across states (inter-state), the same total flows to Integrated GST, which the GST Council later apportions between the Centre and states. This calculator does the split for you so you can fill your invoice or e-way bill correctly.
