Why most people pick the wrong credit card

Choosing a card based on a YouTuber's welcome-bonus video almost always backfires. The bonus is a one-time hit; the card stays with you for years and quietly extracts annual fees, GST-heavy interest, and forex markups while you stop tracking rewards. This checklist is a 5-minute defence: walk every box before you click "Apply" and you cut the chance of regret to near zero.

The 15 boxes — at a glance

  • Income eligibility match (last 3 months' salary slips)
  • CIBIL ≥ 750 — pull free report from CIBIL or OnePaisa
  • Joining-fee waiver trigger (spend in 90 days)
  • Annual-fee reversal threshold (e.g. ₹3 lakh/year)
  • Effective reward rate on YOUR top 3 spend categories
  • Redemption rate (₹/point) — flights vs vouchers vs cashback
  • Reward expiry and capping
  • Lounge access count and guest rules
  • Fuel surcharge waiver bracket
  • Forex markup % and DCC opt-out
  • Cash-withdrawal fee + interest from day one
  • Late-payment fee slab and APR
  • Insurance covers — air accident, lost-card liability
  • Customer-care channels and 24×7 hotline
  • Hard-pull impact on CIBIL (avoid 3+ in 6 months)

Red flags that should kill an application

The PDF flags six deal-breakers most listicles ignore: a renewal fee with no waiver path, "reward rate" that excludes common spend categories like utilities and education, an APR above 42% p.a., a foreign-currency markup over 3.5%, mandatory DCC at international ATMs, and any card whose grievance escalation chain stops at email-only support.

Use the checklist with our tools

Once you've filtered the catalogue to 2–3 candidates, plug your monthly spending into the Credit Card Rewards Optimizer to see the actual ₹/year you'd earn after fees, then run the final pick through the card finder for a sanity check on eligibility.

Disclaimer:Card features, fees and rewards change frequently. Always verify the latest most-important-terms (MITC) document on the issuer's website before applying.
