Indian credit cards collectively hold over ₹3,000 crore of unredeemed reward points — value that quietly expires every month. The reason: most users default to whatever's easiest (statement credit, merchandise catalogue) which pays the worst ₹/point rate. Here's how to actually maximise your points.
The redemption value spectrum
For most reward point currencies, the ₹/point you get varies dramatically by route:
| Redemption type | Typical ₹/point | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Merchandise catalogue (microwaves, toasters) | ₹0.10 - ₹0.20 | High |
| Statement credit | ₹0.20 - ₹0.30 | Low |
| Brand vouchers (Amazon, Pantaloons, etc.) | ₹0.25 - ₹0.50 | Medium |
| Travel portal — flights / hotels | ₹0.50 - ₹1.00 | Medium |
| Airline miles transfer | ₹1.00 - ₹2.00 (best class redemptions) | High |
The pattern: easy = bad value, effort = good value. The 5-10x range across these routes means a careless user gets ₹5,000 worth from points another user extracts ₹50,000 from.
Card-by-card best routes
HDFC Infinia / Diners Black
SmartBuy gift vouchers and SmartBuy hotel bookings are the gold standard. Hotel redemption hits ₹1/point regularly. Marriott, Tata Cliq, and Vistara conversions can reach ₹0.80-₹1.00. Statement credit drops to ₹0.30 — avoid.
HDFC Regalia Gold
SmartBuy travel at ₹0.50/point is the best routine option. The 4 reward points per ₹150 base rate becomes 1.33% effective at ₹0.50/point — competitive with cashback cards.
SBI Card ELITE / PRIME
Yatra travel portal gives ₹0.50/point — the best non-statement route. Statement credit is ₹0.25 — exactly half. Always go Yatra route if travelling.
Axis Magnus / Reserve
Marriott Bonvoy partnership at 4:5 conversion (4 Magnus = 5 Marriott points) is exceptional during promotional windows. Vistara conversion at 12:5 (12 reward points = 5 Club Vistara miles) is also strong for India domestic redemptions.
SBI SimplyCLICK / SimplySAVE
Amazon and Cleartrip vouchers at ₹0.25/point. The catalogue is broad (200+ brands) so vouchers for brands you actually use give the best rate.
Airline miles transfer — the highest-value route
For frequent international travellers, transferring credit-card points to airline miles unlocks redemptions at 2-3x cash equivalent. Common transfers:
- HDFC → Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 1:0.5
- HDFC → Vistara Club at 1:0.5
- Axis → Marriott Bonvoy at 4:5 (then Marriott → airline at 3:1)
- American Express → Singapore / Etihad / Marriott at 4:1 typically
A return Mumbai-Singapore business class on KrisFlyer costs ~120,000 miles vs ₹3 lakh cash equivalent — i.e., ₹2.5/point if you bank Singapore-bound miles.
The merchandise catalogue — almost always avoid
Catalogues are designed to clear inventory at unfavourable redemption rates. A microwave that retails at ₹6,000 may cost 60,000 points (₹0.10/point) — half the value of statement credit and a quarter of voucher value.
Exception: limited-edition watches and exclusive merchandise sometimes show up at fair conversion. Spot-check on Amazon for the same item before redeeming.
Expiry — track and use
Most points expire in 24-36 months. HDFC Infinia points never expire. SBI points expire 24 months after earning. Set a calendar reminder for the oldest tranche of points and redeem before they vanish.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I combine points across two cards from the same issuer?
Yes for HDFC (single account). Yes for SBI within Reward+ programme. No for ICICI (per-card pots).
Is there a fee to redeem?
Most banks charge ₹99 for physical product redemption and statement credit, ₹0 for portal vouchers. AURUM and HDFC Infinia waive all redemption fees.
Can I redeem someone else's points (gift)?
No — points are non-transferable across customers. Voucher redemption is the workaround: redeem to a brand voucher and gift the voucher.
