Parents or legal guardians of a girl child under 10 years of age can open one SSY account per girl child (maximum two per family, three in case of twins on the second birth).
Deposits are required only for the first 15 years from account opening. After that, no further deposits are needed, but the balance continues to earn interest until the account matures 21 years from opening.
Yes — SSY is an EEE instrument. Deposits qualify for Section 80C deduction, interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is fully tax-free.
Unlike PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana interest compounds annually. Deposits are required only for the first 15 years from account opening; after that, the balance keeps earning interest with no further deposits needed until the account matures at 21 years from opening (or on the girl's marriage after age 18, if earlier).
